To the “Waldertor” viewpoint

Beautiful views of Rodenegg Castle

The “Waldertor“ viewpoint near Viums boasts superb views of the mighty Rodenegg Castle on its rocky mountain slope above the Rienz Ravine. One of the largest fortified castles in South Tyrol, Rodenegg Castle is also famed for its Iwein frescoes, the oldest secular frescoes of the German-speaking world.
Route description

From the Kirchplatz church square in Natz, follow the village road north towards Viums. After approximately 150 m, the “Dörferrunde” sign leads off to the right and through settlement areas, initially through fields and then on relatively flat forest trails, to the ”Waldertor” viewpoint, where you can enjoy magnificent views of Rodenegg Castle, opposite the viewpoint. The hike continues westward to the village of Viums with the idyllic St. Magdalena hilltop chapel. On the western side of the village, follow marked trail no. 1 to the left, and head southwards on field trails and through orchards to the “Sommersürs” biotope. You will now come to the Natz-Viums road; follow this road to the south to return to your set-off point in Natz.
